"Caius! I got a gift from you!" A girl giggled and handed him her gift. It was a pack of store-bought chocolate.
Shizuka hid her gift behind her back. She watched as Caius grinned and accepted the other girls' gift, knowing exactly what to say. So. He got a lot of gifts from other girls. How would her gift be any different? It was a depressing thought. Shizuka watched as everyone laughed and partied, exchanging 'valentine' gifts, let it be chocolate, roses, or kisses.
Caius had flirted with her. Followed her. Bothered her to no end. However, she knew that as handsome as he was, he would be popular. She just didn't want to see it. Shizuka stood abruptly to leave. She couldn't stand seeing this anymore. She was just an extra wheel in this party anyways. Besides, Caius didn't care that she was alone, he was too busy with other girls, she thought sadly. Shizuka strode out of the club, knowing Caius probably wouldn't notice.
From the other side of the room, Karah watched her stride off. She looked at her brother, David, who was looking very awkward with a girl trying to flirt with him. Karah smiled sweetly at the flirting girl, before flashing her a 'Get Away From Him' Look, with daggars in her eyes. If she didn't get away, there would be a serious cat fight coming along. Chances were, she would probably start it. Karah was in a horrible mood, coming to this stupid club & seeing Shizuka leave like that. That stupid jerk, Caius! He didn't realize what he did.
Noticing a young man staring at her, she gave a nod and smile. But to discourage him, she quickly looked away. Most guys took that as disinterested. She wasn't here for guys after all. She was here to make sure no leech would attach themselves to her dear brother. That and, she knew Caius and Shizuka were going to be here.
***
Caius, contrary to what Karah and Shizuka thought, did watch Shizuka leave. Still, how could he approach her? She had her pick of guys, he thought jealously. How could she not realize? He looked at these other girls, none of them meaning anything. They were all the usually empty-headed, vapid girls who offered only physical beauty. He wanted her to show something, at least with him being with all these girls. Still, she was her usual self, aloof to her surroundings. It would have been nice to have some hint that she felt something for him. No, she ignored him, even leaving him with all these girls.
***
Shizuka walked along the dark alleys, hardly feeling the pouring rain. She felt tears approaching, although no one would know the difference with the rain and all . She wiped them away angrily. There was never anything there, she told herself fiercely. It was wrong to think there was anything between them in the first place. Caius, he was never there for her. He was there, only to watch and report her for the sake of the Black Order. She gripped her chocolates, regretting the time she spent on them. It took her hours to make those by herself. She refused help from everyone in the kitchen, even Jerry. They had at first, insisted to help her, but when they found out she was insistent on making them by herself, and wouldn't budge, they left her alone. She suspected they already knew who it was for but they didn't ask, neither did she offer them any information.
"Shizuka, you're not going to cry." She scolded herself. She wasn't going to cry. At least, not until she got home.
***
Karah walked over to Caius, jerking him away from the crowd of girls. They protested, but didn't stop her. Karah knew, those girls being who they were, would bitch behind her back rather than telling her. Sure enough, they started as soon as her back was turned.
"Who was she?!".. "That catty bitch.." "Just cuz she's a little pretty!.."
Karah almost wanted to laugh at their predictable behaivior if it weren't for Caius.
"Do you want to give me chocolates too?" Karah sent a murderous glare. "Or a kiss..?" Now she wanted to scratch his eyes out. He held up his hands, in mock surrender. "I guess not. Yeesh."
"Caius! Do you even realize what you did?""
"What? You mean Shizuka?" His grin faded.
"Hell yea! I mean, Shizuka! Who else could I possibly be talking about?" It would be impossible not to hear the sarcasm in her voice.
"If you mean her, I dont know what you could want to talk about." he shrugged his shoulders. He wasn't in the mood to talk, but Karah wouldn't leave him alone. He knew from experience.
"Why would you do that? I thought you liked her. How can you go around, accepting gifts from other girls?" Karah asked, her voice trailing off... "Would you just go after any girl in a skirt?"
"Maybe because we don't have a relationship? Let me make this clear. We are not, in any way, tied to each other. So I'm free to come and go as I please." He leaned in closer to Karah, his face hovering over hers, His lips were dangerously close to hers.
"Riightt. I would think you want to seduce someone like me.." Karah smiled seductively. Right before she brang up her knee against a very sensitive part of his anatomy.
"Holy shit!" Caius barely dodged the blow. He looked at her innocent, smiling face. He supposed he deserved that. "I feel sorry for the any idiot who couldn't dodge that." He winced at the thought if he hadn't dodged.
"I'm verrry glad you realize that." She purred. "Now back to Shizuka.." He knew that was coming. "Did it ever occur to you as to why she would come to a place like this?" He frowned. That was a strange question. "No, considering she doesn't even like places like these. I would think that you knew that." He did, actually. So why did she come?
"Dumbass, You even think she came for you?"
David finally saw Karah. Talking. To Caius. He groaned. Oh shit, oh shit. Shizuka wouldn't want him to know. He tried to rush over, praying he would catch her before she said it.
"She came to give you Valentine chocolates to tell you exactly how she felt, dumbass!" Karah said with gritted teeth. How could he be so stupid? The idiot!
David fell to a screeching halt before the two. Caius looked stunned.
"Wait, what..?"
David wanted to do a face-palm. There, his sister went with no regards to Shizuka's feelings whatsoever. Or perhaps too much. It was one or the other.
"Why didn't she..---"
"YOU JACK-ASS!" Karah wanted to slap him. "From the moment she came, to the moment she left, what do you think you were doing?"
Caius remembered with a sinking feeling. He had been with girls the entire time. Knowing Shizuka, she wouldn't show how hurt she was. She would..
He stood up and ran out the door. Karah leaned back with a satisfied look. David looked at her with accusing eyes.
"You knew.."
"Hell yea, I knew. How else could I be sure Shizuka wouldn't be mad at me later?" She said, mischieviously. "That was a good act though right?"
"I doubt it was all an act." David wanted to laugh at his sister's antics.
*** The rain wouldn't stop. She felt herself getting soaked, her hair and the dress that she worked so hard on. People rushed by, paying no attention to a rain-soaked girl, too busy in their own affairs.
She walked and walked. She didn't know how or when, but she reached her apartment. Shizuka closed the door, throwing the chocolates to the floor, slumping down. She felt numb the entire way here, but she could feel the numbness fading. After that, there would be pain. Her heart clenched painfully, remembering. Caius. He didn't even care. He didn't care. Shizuka hugged herself, trying to ease the chills, although it was unknown if it was because of the rain, or the loneliness she felt. Was he enjoying himself? Possibly sleeping with another girl? She pushed the thought away, it was too painful.
Could she wake up tomorrow, and pretend everything was fine? Could she see him tomorrow, and say she was fine? People always said pain would fade in time. Somehow, it didn't feel like it. It felt like it would last long, long after that. She clenched her fists, her nails drawing blood. But she didn't notice that. She only knew the tears running down her cheeks, and the pain her heart felt. She sat there crying in silence. She didn't know how long she sat there, at least until she was interrupted.
Ring~ Ring~. That was the doorbell.
She didn't answer, hoping the person would go away. Just go away. She didn't want to talk or see anybody. All they could offer was empty words and pitying gazes.
Ring!~ Ring!~ The doorbell kept ringing.
JUST GO AWAY!
"Shizuka. I know you're in there." Shizuka froze. Caius?
No. It couldn't be him. He wouldn't be here.
"Shizuka." No. He was here. She didn't want him to see her like this. Maybe.. Maybe if she just kept quiet, he would leave. Shizuka held her breath, waiting.. She didn't know how much time passed, but each minute seemed unbearably long. She didn't hear anything.. so.. maybe.. maybe he was gone..
She unlocked the door, opening it a crack.. No.. I think he left..
She saw flash of movement. She pushed the door closed. Not fast enough. He caught the door, wincing as it slammed on his fingers. She kept her back pressed against the door, frantic. Why is he here?! Why?!
Caius pushed his way in, and Shizuka, tried to push him out.
"Shizuka! Calm down―" As they were grappling, he pushed her down on the ground, trapping her wrists with his hand. This was a very awkward position but considering the circumstances..
"Shizuka. Look at me." He said, softly. She kept it averted from him, her hair partially covering her face. He tucked her stray locks behind an ear. "Shizuka.. I'm sorry." His answer was met with silence. "I know.. I know I hurt you when I was flirting with all those girls. I just wanted you.. I just wanted you to feel jealous. To do something so that I knew how you felt." Caius had never been honest, and it was a bit hard, especially when she still didn't answer.
"Shizuka. I know it was wrong of me to do that but.. You just look so beautiful.. I'm afraid that other guys will take you away. I can't even imagine how any guy doesn't want you." He looked down at her, hoping for some kind of reaction.
"Can you get off?" She said in a small voice.
He slowly got up, releasing her hands. He said what he meant to say. Now it was up to her. While he was waiting, he looked at her, feeling worse by the minute. Her clothes and hair were wet, and she seemed chilled to the bone. DId that mean she walked home atewards in the pouring rain? And her face... She was crying. He felt guilty. To think, he had put her through this because of his idiotic idea.
"Do you love me?"
"Of course I ―"
"No. Do you really? Or is it just something you felt during all the time you've been watching me?" Shizuka felt horrible. She wanted to be happy with what he just told her. At the same time, she needed to know that this was real.
"Or is this something they told you to come up with?" Not some ploy by the Order. Not by the Vatician.
"Or, is it me as a exorcist?" That he loved her, for her, and only her. Not the exorcist she was.
She was scared to hear his answer. But in the darkness of this room, the tense silence, he could answer with nothing but the truth. Anything else.. It would never be the same. There would always be a sense of distrust among them.
"You want to hear the truth?" Shizuka gave a small nod. She didn't want to hear it but.. if she didn't..
She looked down, she couldn't face him... She heard the rustling of his clothes, knowing he was going to leave. He didn't love her, after all. She watched as the tears dropped on the floor... And then she felt a sudden grip before he grabbed her. He pulled her into his arms, hugging her so hard, it was nearly painful.
"I can't believe you would ask me that stupid question. Of course, I love you for you!" He ran his hands through his hair, irritated beyond reasoning. "I've seen everything there is to you. I've seen when you feel happy. Mad. Even sad. I know that you often cry when you're by yourself. But I know that you're strong. You have the strength to keep fighting, no matter what the situation. How can I love you for anything else besides yourself?" He was pissed that she would even ask that.
